My awareness and attitude towards Plastic changed drastically the day I watched a Turtle swim towards a plastic bag mistaking it for its jellyfish lunch!
And that was just one of many incidents to follow where I saw man-made plastic suffocate and choke our planet and all other beings on it!
I’m a B-school graduate, Corporate World Employee turned Scuba diving instructor, with over 500 memorable dives across a few countries.
One thing, however, remains consistent across these countries below the surface – seeing plastic underwater! Not only is the plastic choking our planet above the water surface, it is causing the death of a multitude of endangered species across the oceans as well. With plastic products found and brought back above the surface on numerous dives, the harsh reality of a 5-minute straw staying in the world for at least 200 years hit me.
On one such dive, I saw a hawksbill sea turtle heading for a nice jellyfish lunch. But when I looked more carefully, I realised that the turtle was slowly swimming towards a transparent plastic bag – which looked very much like a jellyfish underwater. With an intent to get in the way of this turtle and its plastic lunch, I swam towards the plastic bag, while making a sound with a metal stick (called the tank pointer) on my tank to distract the turtle. Thankfully (and maybe annoyingly for the turtle), the noise made him swim away and I could reach the plastic bag before it could.
That day the turtle got to live but that was also the day that I realised its time for us to change our plastic habits.
The first plastic product ever made still exists in the environment!
Till we don’t reduce the amount of plastic we are using and disposing, all efforts of clean-up and recycling will not be enough. We need to address the problem at the source. Every small habit change today will go a long way in reducing the plastic menace!
I am an Engineer turned XLRI MBA Graduate turned Corporate Bee turned Scuba Diving Instructor turned Entrepreneur.
Driven by the saying, “Everything you truly want is on the other side of fear”, after almost 8 years of corporate experience, with MNC giants like P&G and Unilever, and an MBA from XLRI in hand, I quit the corporate world in 2016 to follow my passion of scuba diving and become a diving instructor in Indonesia.
While teaching diving, I also saw the impact of plastic and what we consider as throwing “away”. A regular volunteer for beach clean-ups and dive clean-ups, the hard realisation that clean-ups alone are not enough drove me to focus towards reducing consumption. The first defining moment was chasing a turtle away from a plastic bag, its assumed jellyfish lunch and the sad realisation that many turtles don’t get the chance of being rescued from plastic bags! The second incident hit straight home when I found a pack of one of the brands I used to handle, at the bottom of one of the coral reefs I had grown to love over time.
Seeing the damage first-hand, I came back to India with the aim of reducing plastic consumption and The Happy Turtle was born. Driven by passion and armed with corporate world experience, I continue to bring the two together in cost-effective sustainable ways of reducing plastic consumption and addressing the root cause of the problem.
My journey as a founder/entrepreneur has been illustrious and nothing short of colourful- from steel manufacturer to an automobile service provider, I have done it all and have dirtied my hands as well. I’m a B-School graduate, and serial entrepreneur.
Belonging to a family of First Generation entrepreneurs and automobile startups, I never settled into a desk job and always looked at new and interesting ventures and that’s why I’m here today with The Happy Turtle as well.
From a single factory founded in 2009, we are now a group of four companies, with more ventures in pipeline. My journey so far has been helped along by a booming Indian market and dedication and commitment that has ensured a phenomenal growth over the years. We have experienced growth not just in terms of financial numbers, but tremendous improvements in quality as well.
I am a firm believer in the quote , “If you want to walk fast, walk alone, if you want to walk far, walk together”
I have the honour of being the youngest elected member for International Tube Association, one of my companies has also been nominated as the fastest growing SME in the Steel industry by InC and ET. I have also received the Startup Award for India’s 1st Maker Space in the automobile sector.
I now look forward to venturing into Environment Conservation and Reducing Plastic Consumption with The Happy Turtle and reaching new milestones in the same.
